THE FORMAT
HOW THE RUGBY
WORKS
Hilversum is a one-day festival: all of the rugby is played on Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027. Teams register between 8am and 9.30am, the first matches kick off at 10am, and the finals are played at around 5pm. Every team plays at least four matches, and results are live on the tournament app all day.
The format grows with the players. The youngest teams, Under 7 and Under 8, play 6-a-side tag rugby; Under 9 and Under 10 play 8-a-side; Under 11 and Under 12 play 12-a-side; and from Under 13 to Under 18 it is full 15-a-side, in one-year age groups. Rolling substitutions are allowed.
Girls are welcome and play alongside the boys in the same team. Clubs affiliated to the English, Scottish or Welsh unions play in their home age groups, based on the 1 September to 31 August playing year; for everyone else, age groups go by year of birth.
Every team is given a match ball to play with and take home as a keepsake. Food and drink are served all day, and the festival closes with a friendly international match and a DJ.

The rugby is only half the weekend. The whole tour stays together on park — and once the boots come off, the evenings take over: fancy dress, karaoke, live entertainment and a dance floor full of teammates and parents. It's the part of the festival nobody plans for and nobody forgets.
